News Sheet - Surface Pattern Design

Everywhere you look you see surfaces that have been decorated.

Whether it be a hard medium like buildings or objects or a soft organic medium like fabrics or gardens, there's no getting away from it...

Surface pattern is everywhere!

Surface Pattern Design

I love surface pattern design. When studying textile design at Wellington Polytec in the early nineties, it was by far my favourite subject. If you're wondering what it is, it's basically the decoration of surfaces. This can be for aesthetic purposes or in the case of interiors, for atmosphere and comfort.

Below is a selection of artists I have found inspiring, and who cover a wide range of surface pattern techniques through different mediums.

Being self-trained and fumbling through the detritus of millennial pop culture, I’ve recently embraced scepticism and vocal atheism as tools to cope with life’s realist tendencies. My fantasies however play out through my art, underpinned somewhat by my ideologies of justice, empowerment and critical analysis.

In our pre-post and neo-apocalyptic four dimensional world I find the greatest contribution I can make without becoming a burden on society is to create yet more stuff. This however conflicts with my aspiration to live a ‘green’ existence.  I console myself with the knowledge that my stuff is a lot better than the majority of stuff out there. It is well-executed, well-finished, long lasting, aesthetically pleasing, thought provoking and usually has a bonus robot or too in it. I take it seriously (so you don’t have to) and can support a young family with my talent, full-time. This means I’m a valued economic asset in our merit-ocracy and potentially a good bet too (low risk, low yields).

I paint, whittle and sketch with abnormally heavy hand tools in order to intimidate other artists on the beach with my physique and to show that being an artist is a manly and important occupation.

I am a screen printer by (sort of) trade, and started screen printing when I was about 13, because we couldn't buy punk t-shirts then, and have been printing on and off ever since.

I have been painting and doing stencil art for around 20 something years, exhibited in Auckland in the early/mid 90's.

I have been working in stencil spray painting for the 10 years, (only using the cheapest range of paints available, to self impose colour range).Had a couple of pretty successful shows in Hastings.

I am about to start new show for exhibition next year.

I live in Flaxmere with Siobhan, my wife, and our three children, two cats, two rats and a dog.

For amusement I restore vintage racing bicycles, and ride them wearing the period racing clothing circa 1950's-early 60's.

This woman is a excellent example of how a digital artist can translate her work into different media. Her whimsical futuristic style, fits perfectly as surface pattern design for textiles, art, new media, and fashion.

Born and raised in Colombia, and living in Barcelona since 1999, Catalina brings all the colors and power of Latin-American folklore and refines it with a subtle touch of European sophistication.
